Committed to Crane Safety Employer Profile: Cianbro

cianbro-35xOctober 2016—Founded in 1949 by the Cianchette Brothers, Cianbro is now one of the United States’ largest, most diverse, successful, open shop, 100% employee-owned (30th largest in the United States) construction and construction services companies. Presently operating in more than 40 states, 12 markets, and employing over 4,000 team members (including wholly owned subsidiary Starcon), Cianbro manages and self-performs civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, fabrication, and coating projects.

Cianbro-quote-1116Throughout its 67-year history, Cianbro has safely and efficiently planned, managed, and constructed many technically complex, historic, and environmentally sensitive projects for a wide variety of public and private clients. A total commitment to safety—combined with the enthusiasm of an innovative team of construction professionals—has enabled Cianbro to build a durable reputation for completing projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Regarding NCCCO’s recognition of Cianbro’s commitment to crane safety, Cianbro Corporation President Andi Vigue said, “I am very proud of our team for this accomplishment. At Cianbro, we strive to be the best at what we do, and operating our cranes safely is one of the activities that we take as seriously as anything else on our agenda. Hats off to the team members whose commitment to safety made this honor possible.”

Health & Safety
Cianbro’s number one priority is the safety of its team members: the Cianbro culture emphasizes that all team members should go home in better condition than which they arrived. Recognized as a national leader in pursuing health and safety in the workplace, Cianbro’s success can be credited directly to the team’s attitude towards working safe, one which is unmatched in the construction industry. This emphasis on safety has enabled Cianbro to keep its Total Recordable Incident Rate below 2.0 since 2008, a remarkable track record.

A key component of this commitment to safety is Cianbro’s support, endorsement, and adoption of CCO certification for its crane operators, riggers, and signalpersons. The firm currently employs 80 CCO-certified operators, 193 CCO-certified riggers, and 187 CCO-certified signalpersons. Although the company prefers to hire CCO-certified operators, when it does occasionally hire non-certified operators, those operators are given training as soon as possible so that they can earn the appropriate CCO certification(s).

According to Crane Training Coordinator, Roy Bolton II, “Cianbro has found that its CCO-certified employees are better qualified and understand the laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the skills of their trade, plus they are more safety conscience during their work day. It is surprising how many construction workers you meet who have never followed OSHA and ASME laws, rules, and regulations before getting involved with NCCCO. CCO-certification has made a big impact on how our team members conduct their work because it has increased awareness of these rules.”

Awards & Recognition
As the recipient of over 65 years of awards, Cianbro has been nationally recognized as the Contractor of the Year and the Healthiest and Safest Company in America. Plus, for the past several years, Associated Builders and Contractors has recognized Cianbro’s commitment to safety with its National Safety Pinnacle Award and National Safety Excellence Award.
